Islamabad – Ms. Maja Mortensen, Ambassador of Denmark to Pakistan, held a substantive meeting today with the Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Dr. Musadik Malik, at his office. The discussions centered on advancing climate cooperation and science diplomacy amid global political shifts.
In a comprehensive dialogue, Dr. Malik emphasized the stark inequalities in climate impact and financing. He pointed out that countries in the Global South endure disproportionate consequences of climate change, despite being minor contributors to global emissions. The Minister highlighted that approximately 70% of worldwide greenhouse gas emissions originate from only ten nations, which simultaneously receive an estimated 85% of global green finance—a disparity he described as fundamentally imbalanced.
The Federal Minister commended the Nordic nations for their exemplary social welfare frameworks and forward-thinking environmental policies. The conversation also covered the broader geopolitical climate and its influence on international collaboration for climate mitigation.
A key focus of the meeting was Pakistan’s initiative to establish a Green University. Dr. Malik detailed plans for the institution, envisioned as a hub for joint international research, academic partnerships, and robust student and faculty exchange programmes with premier global universities.
Both sides reiterated their dedication to deepening bilateral relations, with a specific emphasis on enhancing joint efforts in climate action and science diplomacy. The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to transforming shared environmental values into concrete, cooperative projects for sustainable development.
