- King Mohammed VI A Visionary Monarch Leading Morocco’s Healthcare Renaissance
Rabat – In a powerful demonstration of His unwavering commitment to the well-being of the Moroccan people, His Majesty King Mohammed VI, accompanied by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan, inaugurated on Monday the state-of-the-art “Mohammed VI International University Hospital Complex of Rabat.” This monumental achievement stands as a testament to the Sovereign’s far-sighted vision to provide equitable, world-class healthcare for all citizens.

On the same momentous day, in a move that underscores a nationwide strategy, His Majesty the King issued His High Instructions to commission “the Mohammed VI University Hospital Center of Agadir.” This dual initiative marks a historic stride in reinforcing Morocco’s medical infrastructure, from the capital to the Souss-Massa region, ensuring that cutting-edge care is accessible across the nation.
The Rabat Complex: A Beacon of Medical Excellence and Innovation
More than just a hospital, the Mohammed VI International University Hospital Complex in Rabat is a true emblem of a new era in smart, patient-centric healthcare. Established by the Mohammed VI Foundation for Science and Health, this internationally renowned facility embodies the utmost care and visionary leadership of HM the King.

Spanning a vast 280,000 m², the Complex is a fully integrated ecosystem comprising two complementary pillars:
- The Mohammed VI International University Hospital of Rabat (190,000 m²)
- The Mohammed VI University of Science and Health (90,000 m²)
A Patient-Centered, Next-Generation Facility:
Designed with the citizen at its heart, the Rabat University Hospital is a marvel of modern medicine. With an initial capacity of 600 beds (expandable to 1,000), it hosts over 30 specialized poles of excellence, including:
- Robotic surgery, neurosurgery, and interventional cardiology
- Advanced oncology and radiotherapy
- Cutting-edge medical imaging
The facility is equipped with technology that sets new benchmarks for Africa, including:
- PET-MRI, a first in Morocco and Africa, for hyper-precise diagnosis.
- 24 ultramodern operating rooms, including hybrid and robotic suites.
- 143 intensive care beds, including 30 for neonates.
- Africa’s first fully automated laboratory platform and Morocco’s only digitalized anatomical pathology lab.
Unique services like a dedicated burn unit and the nation’s sole hyperbaric and hypobaric oxygen therapy service further solidify its status as a regional medical leader.
Forging the Future of Healthcare Education:
Reflecting the King’s determination to invest in human capital, the adjoining University of Sciences and Health is a premier academic hub. With a capacity for 8,000 students, it encompasses faculties of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Veterinary Medicine, and Nursing. An international medical simulation center provides students with immersive, hands-on training, ensuring Morocco’s future healthcare professionals are among the best in the world.
The Agadir University Hospital: A Regional Leap Forward
In parallel, the new Mohammed VI University Hospital Center in Agadir, built with an investment of 3.1 billion MAD, is poised to revolutionize healthcare for nearly 3 million people in the Souss-Massa region. This 867-bed facility ends the need for patients to travel long distances for complex treatments.
A symbol of modernity, the Agadir CHU is the first in Africa to integrate the surgical robot “Revo I,” enabling minimally invasive procedures with micrometric precision. Its advanced cardiology pole, complete with intensive care units and catheterization labs, ensures comprehensive care for heart patients. Furthermore, a central pharmacy with a medication-dispensing robot guarantees secure and automated delivery, a first in the region.
A Sovereign’s Legacy of Care and Development
These two monumental projects are far more than architectural achievements; they are the physical manifestation of His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s profound love and care for his people. By prioritizing:
- Equitable Access: Ensuring all Moroccans, regardless of location, have access to next-generation medical care.
- Medical Training: Creating a virtuous cycle of excellence by training future generations of healthcare professionals to the highest international standards.
- Economic Growth: Generating thousands of direct and indirect jobs, contributing significantly to regional and national development.
- Sustainability: The Rabat Complex, with its HQE “Exceptional” certification and extensive solar panels, reflects a commitment to a healthy planet alongside healthy citizens.
Through this unwavering dedication, His Majesty continues to build a healthier, stronger, and more prosperous Morocco for all.
