MANILA – The death toll from a magnitude 6.9 earthquake that hit off Cebu Island in the central Philippines has reached 60, with over 140 others injured, government officials said Wednesday.
The temblor struck at 9:59 p.m. Tuesday in waters 11 kilometers east-southeast of Calape in the island’s north, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The number of victims is expected to rise as rescue operation continues.
Rescuers continued to comb through rubble of collapsed structures. In the town of San Remigio, a gymnasium collapsed while a basketball game was in progress. Local governments shared photos online of damaged churches, roads and buildings, and a power outage was reported in many areas.
