UK Introduces E-Visas for Pakistani Students and Workers to Streamline Immigration Process
Islamabad – The United Kingdom has launched a new e-visa system for Pakistani students and workers, marking a significant step in modernizing its border and immigration framework. The announcement, made by the British High Commission (BHC) in Islamabad on Tuesday, comes just a day after the UK and Pakistan signed a Trade Dialogue Mechanism Agreement to strengthen bilateral economic ties.
Digital Shift for Easier, More Secure Visas
Under the new system, most Pakistani students and workers applying for stays longer than six months will receive an e-visa—a digital proof of immigration status—instead of physical visa stickers. The move aims to simplify the application process, reduce paperwork, and enhance security.
British High Commissioner Jane Marriott highlighted the benefits on social media platform X, stating: “This change makes the visa process simpler for students and workers. It also means applicants can keep their passports during processing, saving time.”
The UK government has been transitioning to a fully digital immigration system since 2024, with millions already using e-visas on select routes. The BHC confirmed that the scheme will eventually expand to cover all visa categories.
Who is Eligible?
The e-visa will be available for:
- Students (including short-term 11-month study visas)
- Skilled Workers (healthcare, IT, engineering, etc.)
- Global Talent and Business Mobility routes
- International Sportspersons
- Temporary Workers (charity, creative, religious roles)
- Youth Mobility Scheme participants
However, applicants for visitor visas or dependent visas will still receive physical documents. Those with existing valid visas need not take any action.
How Does It Work?
- Applicants will create a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account to access their e-visa.
- The digital status can be linked to a passport for seamless travel.
- The shift to e-visas does not affect current immigration statuses.
A Step Toward Stronger UK-Pakistan Ties
The e-visa rollout follows the establishment of the UK-Pakistan Business Advisory Council, aimed at boosting trade and investment. High Commissioner Marriott emphasized that the digital system reflects the UK’s commitment to smoother, more efficient immigration processes for Pakistani nationals.
