Norwegian playwright Jon Fosse wins Nobel Prize in literature

Norwegian author and playwright Jon Fosse on Thursday won this year’s Nobel Prize in literature, the Swedish Academy said.

Fosse was honored “for his innovative plays and prose which give voice to the unsayable,” according to the academy. He is the first Norwegian to be awarded since female author Sigrid Undset in 1928.

Born in Haugesund, Norway, the 64-year-old writes in Norwegian Nynorsk and is often compared to Henrik Ibsen, a Norwegian playwright known for “A Doll’s House.”
