Israel’s Cabinet on Wednesday approved a four-day cease-fire in return for the freeing of around 50 women and children from among the hostages being held by the Hamas militant group in the Gaza Strip.
The deal, brokered by the United States and Qatar, will also see around 150 Palestinian women and children released from Israeli prisons, Hamas said in a statement.
The cease-fire would also allow for the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza, where Israel launched an air and ground assault after a surprise attack by Hamas on Oct. 7.
Israel has said the attack by Hamas killed 1,200 people and around 240 hostages were taken to Gaza. Israel’s bombardment has killed over 14,000, including more than 5,000 children, according to Gaza health authorities.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel will continue with its offensive against Hamas after the truce expires. But his government also said combat could be suspended for an extra day for every 10 additional hostages released.
