Golf: Nasa Hataoka 5 shots off pace at Women’s British Open

Japan’s Nasa Hataoka shot a 1-under 71 on Saturday to sit five strokes off the pace in a tie for ninth place after the third round of the Women’s British Open.

Lilia Vu of the United States and Charley Hull of England shared the lead at 9 under for the tournament after carding a 67 and 68, respectively, at Walton Heath Golf Club.

Angel Yin of the United States and Kim Hyo Joo of South Korea moved to 8 under.

Hataoka, a six-time winner on the LPGA Tour but still chasing her first major, had three birdies against two bogeys.

“It felt like the direction of the wind changed every second, making it difficult to read at times,” the 24-year-old said. “I’m in the position of chasing (the co-leaders), but I hope to get a good result by concentrating on my own play.”

Among other Japanese players, Minami Katsu, who started the day in a three-way tie for second, dropped to 14th at 3 under after struggling to a 74.

Akie Iwai (69) and Yuna Nishimura (72) were two more shots back in a tie for 17th.
