A man killed at least 16 people and injured dozens Wednesday night in shootings at a bowling alley and restaurant in Maine in northeastern United States, local media reported.
Hundreds of police are searching for the suspect at large, and a 40-year-old man has been named as a person of interest. Local residents have been urged to remain indoors.
The man is a firearms instructor believed to be in the Army Reserve assigned to a training facility in Saco, Maine, the Associated Press reported. He had been committed to a mental health facility for two weeks this summer.
The mental health facility said he had reported “hearing voices and threats to shoot up” the military base, according to the AP.
The local sheriff’s office released photos of a man with a rifle who is allegedly connected to the shootings, according to NBC News.
The shootings occurred in Lewiston, about 30 miles north of Portland, with a local medical center saying it was responding to a “mass casualty” event, NBC News reported.
U.S. media earlier reported the death toll at 22 but later revised it by citing local authorities.
